Member for Bendigo West Maree Edwards MP recently officially opened the Allan Labor Government’s $6m redevelopment of the historic Castlemaine Goods Shed – which now features purpose-built, flexible spaces for exhibitions, performances and creative activities.
“Community hubs like these are the beating heart of regional towns, and contribute so much to the social fabric of our communities by bringing people together, and attracting visitors to explore and discover our region and creativity.” Said Ms Edwards
“Castlemaine is home to one of the most exciting creative communities in the state, and this unique creative space transforms an historic icon for contemporary creative and community use.
"Congratulations to everyone involved in transforming this iconic building.”
Originally built in the late 19th century to store goods awaiting rail transport, the Goods Shed is an iconic Castlemaine landmark that has enjoyed strong community support for generations.
The now-complete second stage of the redevelopment — backed by a $6 million investment from the Labor Government — delivers much-needed space for local and visiting artists to work, while celebrating the building’s history and heritage.
The revitalised site provides a unique destination where community members and visitors can enjoy creative and cultural events, strengthening Castlemaine’s reputation as a thriving regional arts hub.
It is also home to the Castlemaine State Festival, which is celebrating its 50th year in 2026.
The first stage of the Goods Shed’s transformation, completed in April 2020, delivered Castlemaine State Festival’s headquarters, meeting rooms, a co-working space for local businesses, and a creative venue available for hire by community and arts groups.
