Sport at Bendigo’s home of cycling and athletics is set to go to the next level, thanks to the completion of upgrades at the Tom Flood Sports Centre backed by the Victorian Government.
Member for Bendigo West Maree Edwards recently joined City of Greater Bendigo and club representatives to officially launch the cycling track, sports field, fencing and lighting upgrades, all made possible by an investment of more than $759,000 from the Allan Labor Government.
“Grassroots sport is the lifeblood of regional cities such as Bendigo. More than ever clubs like Bendigo and District Cycling Club and Bendigo Harriers Athletics Club need quality facilities they can depend on.” Said Ms Edwards.
“The new facilities are a boon for local sport and will help secure Tom Flood Sports Centre’s reputation as the place for cycling and athletics in Bendigo.
“These improvements will also inspire even more locals to get active and join in the fun at this iconic venue in the heart of Bendigo.”
Home to the Bendigo and District Cycling Club and Bendigo Harriers Athletics Club, and host to local school carnivals, live music, community festivals and more, the centre is a major venue for local sport and entertainment.
The project installed 300 lux LED lighting to the cycling track and 200 lux LED lighting to the sports field, enabling the venue to host more training, development, competition and events day and night.
Cycling track works included acrylic treatment, line marking, upgrades to track fencing and entrance and exit gates.
The Victorian Government investment in this project is from the Local Community Sport and Recreation Projects initiative.
Over the past decade the Victorian Government has invested more than $2.3 billion in community sport and recreation infrastructure across the state.
Initiatives like these create jobs, stimulate local economies and improve the health, wellbeing and social outcomes for Victorian communities.
Maree Edwards MP acknowledged project partner City of Greater Bendigo for its management and delivery of the project.
