Castlemaine Community House (CCH) will soon benefit from improved universal access thanks to the Andrews State Labor Government.

Member for Bendigo West, Maree Edwards MP today announced disability access upgrades will be undertaken at CCH to make sure all members of the community enjoy safe and easy access to the valuable services provided by the House.

The current main entrance is not compliant to current disability access standards. There is a step up from street level into a breeze way with a second step into the buildings foyer. From the foyer there are steps down into the building where training and skills education activities occur. The main office is only accessible from the foyer of the building.

Since its construction in 1916 as the Junior Technical School, the building has seen many upgrades however the building’s configuration presents its own challenges when it comes to disability access.

“I have been contacted by several community groups including CCH indicating their concern over access to the building,” said Ms Edwards.

“As CCH is an Adult and Community Further Education service provider, it must offer universal access, so I have lobbied the Minister hard to make this possible.”

Castlemaine Community House Manager, Martyn Shaddick, has worked with the Department of Education and Training to identify potential disability access matters.

To overcome the practical access matters around the main entrance, and access to Castlemaine Community House reception, office and training rooms, the Victorian Government proposes to complete a scope of works.

The front entrance of the building will be reconfigured to enable wheel chair access to the main office, reception and training areas. Funded through the Department of Education and Training, the building will meet current disability access standard.

It is anticipated that works will commence early 2020.

These improvements will ensure that the Castlemaine Community House can continue to provide the vital employment, training and volunteering services people need.
