The Victorian Government has announced $50,000 in funding for Maldon thanks to the Stronger Regional Community Plan — a state-wide small grants program that supports rural and regional towns to create opportunities for economic growth.

Member for Bendigo West Maree Edwards announced the funding for Mount Alexander Shire to undertake the Maldon Historic Town Centre and Shopfront Improvement Business Case.

The business case will determine the viability and economic benefit of investing in the restoration of Maldon’s historic town centre and shopfronts.

It will also engage comprehensively with shop and business owners to deliver final designs, detailed costings, an implementation plan, and recommendations on governance and funding models.

It is anticipated that restoring the town centre and shopfronts would improve the appearance of critical visitor attraction, resulting in increased visitation and greater economic prosperity for the township and region.

Maldon’s strong visual appeal and status as a historically-significant Goldfields town is driven by its unique and coherent, historic built environment.

The business case and proposed restoration will address long standing issues, which if ignored, will further undermine this key regional tourism asset.

Mount Alexander Shire will invest $50,000 in the project and will engage the local community in determining how the streetscape may be improved to reach Maldon’s potential.

“Maldon is a charming and historic town regional town and the Victorian Government wants to see it flourish into the future.”

“With a $50,000 Victorian Government grant, Mount Alexander Shire can undertake the necessary investigations into restoring the town centre and shopfront, so Maldon can continue to attract visitors for many years to come.”

“Right across the state, the Victorian Government is investing in projects big and small the regional Victoria a better place to live and work.”
