$2.3 MILLION TO TRAIN FUTURE WELDERS AND HORTICULTURALISTS IN BENDIGO

State Members for Bendigo, Maree Edwards and Jacinta Allan today announced a $2.3 million funding boost for Bendigo TAFE to train the next generation of Welders and Horticulturalists in Bendigo.

The funding includes a $1.3 million grant under the Andrews Labor Government’s Regional Specialist Training Fund to train 40 students in the Certificate III in Production Horticulture and a $983,000 grant to train 12 students in Fusion Welding.

This funding boost responds to industry identifying skills gaps in the current training for these important courses which will better prepare workers entering the Horticulture and Manufacturing sectors.

Horticulture industries – like almonds, citrus, stone fruit, olive, wine, dried fruit, table fruit, vegetables, flowers and nursery products – are expected to double in size over the coming decade.

In the case of funding for the welding courses, this investment will broaden the skill base of Bendigo’s manufacturing sector providing local manufacturers with the highly skilled welders they need.

Ms Edwards and Ms Allan also announced the architects for Labor’s $59.9 million revitalization of Bendigo City Campus project.

With a selection process that was incredibly rigorous, along with a competitive bidding process, Architectus and Six Degrees Architects will lead the design work for the significant redevelopment of the campus.

Both are committed to sustainable practice and have a track record of creating functional and aesthetically-rich environments.

The Victorian Budget 2018/19 is also investing an additional $644 million to strengthen TAFE, address skills shortages and ensure all Victorians can access the training they need to get a good job.

To make it easier to access training, the Government is investing $172 million to make 30 priority TAFE courses and 20 pre-apprenticeship courses that lead to jobs that are most in demand from Victorian employers tuition free.

“These projects are another example of how the Andrew’s Labor Government is rebuilding our TAFEs so they can deliver training that makes a real difference in our communities.”

“Today we mark another milestone in Labor’s $59.9 million revitalization of Bendigo City Campus project.

The previous Liberal Government spent four years cutting TAFE and closing campuses – we’re rebuilding TAFE to make sure Victorians can get the training the need to get a job.”
