STANDING WITH HARD-WORKING HEALTH SERVICES STAFF IN BENDIGO

A re-elected Andrews Labor Government will establish a landmark training and skills program for our hard-working health services workers in Bendigo, as well as tailored training to keep our frontline staff safe from violence. We said we’d make education and training more affordable for Victorians to get the skills they need for the jobs they want – and we have. The costs of training can often act as a barrier to getting the right skills, which is why we’ve already made 30 TAFE and 20 pre-apprenticeship courses free as part of a once-in-a-generation $172 million revival of TAFE – and now we’re going further. A re-elected Labor Government will establish a $1.25 million Health Services Workers Training Fund two-year pilot, making 100 scholarships available to hospital cooks, cleaners, orderlies, security guards, administrative workers and other frontline staff to grow their careers in the health sector, including the Bendigo Hospital. The $10,000 scholarships will apply to courses such as Certificate III in Non-Emergency Patient Transport, Certificate IV in Health Care, Diploma of Paramedical Science and security officer training. Labor will also invest $2.2 million towards targeted and tailored training to make sure frontline workers are equipped with all the skills and knowledge they need to recognise and respond to occupational violence. Today’s commitment builds on the Labor Government’s investments to keep our dedicated health workers safe, including training for almost 40,000 frontline workers in responding to people affected by ice, $40 million to improve safety at our hospitals, new security guards and a new public awareness campaign. A re-elected Labor Government will make sure frontline health services workers at Bendigo Hospital have the training they need when dealing with high-risk situations. One thousand staff across Victoria will take part in the three-day training course, which will be led by experts and designed to equip ward clerks, front-of-house staff in emergency departments and allied health workers such as social workers with the tools they need. It will be rolled out over four years. This investment stands in stark contrast to the former Liberal Government who went to war with health workers, disrespecting our nurses and failing to do anything about their workplace safety. Only Labor stands with our valued health services workers and only a re-elected Labor Government will deliver the right investments and reforms to make sure every worker comes home safe to their loved ones. “The Liberals went to war against our hard-working health services staff in Bendigo but Labor stands with them and will make sure they have the skills and training they need.” “Only Labor will stand up for health in Bendigo and against the cruel Liberal cuts, ensuring that locals can get the best health care when they need it, closer to home.”
