A new Big Fill vehicle was officially handed over yesterday by Member for Bendigo West Maree Edwards.

Firefighters, friends and family gathered to celebrate the occasion, which included a medal ceremony to recognise brigade members for their outstanding contribution and years of service.

The new  Big Fill vehicle is a 70s series Landcruiser with engine and pump fitted.

It has the capacity to fill two 3,000-litre tankers in less than two minutes. It’s greatest strength is the ability to draw water conventionally from hydrants or from reticulated supply such as damns or pools.

Ms Edwards welcomed the dual purpose vehicle as a great addition to Newstead and the District which will give them better flexibility when responding to incidents.

The new vehicle was funded with more than $117,000 from the Andrew’s Labor Government’s Volunteer Emergency Services Equipment Program (VESEP).

In the spirt of volunteerism the local brigade raised almost $19,000 to contribute to the purchase of the Big Fill .

The Big Fill has already seen having been called into action at Mt Franklin in February earlier this year.

This grant builds on our recent investments to the emergency services sector with the Victorian Budget 2017/18 investing $112.6 million to upgrade facilities, new equipment and training for emergency services across the state.
