Member for Bendigo West, Maree Edwards, in Parliament today, has called on the City of Greater Bendigo councillors to ensure that tomorrow tonight’s (Wednesday, 24/6/15) council budget includes funding for the Bendigo Indoor Aquatic Leisure and Wellbeing Centre (Aquatic Centre), otherwise known as the Kangaroo Flat Aquatic Centre.

There is an expectation in the Bendigo and Kangaroo Flat communities that the Aquatic Centre, will finally get the green light and go ahead.

Of greater expectation will be that this new aquatic centre will include a 50 metre pool. Not a 25 metre pool, but a 50 metre pool.

When the State Government in May 2014, gifted the City of Greater Bendigo with $15 Million towards the aquatic centre, the community were shown plans – all over the local media outlets – of an aquatic centre with a 50 metre pool!

The then Mayor, CEO and other senior executive staff were all holding plans for the proposed aquatic centre,  - with a 50 metre pool on the plan.

The Mayor has stated that the issue around a 25 or 50 metre pool is complicated.

Well it wasn’t complicated 12 months ago!

At the time, The Member for Northern Victoria, Damian Drum ,  made the statement “…the federal Government (Abbott Coalition) would be much more likely to provide funding to the centre after today’s announcement (State’s $15M)…”( Bgo Advertiser May 6th 2014)

Well he was wrong.  No funding has been forthcoming from the Abbott Liberal Government, revealing their lack of interest in Bendigo.

I strongly urge the City of Greater Bendigo to fund the 50 m pool option, which we have been told over and over again, is their number one priority.

And to get on with doing what they said they would do 12 months ago -when they had locked in state funding for a 50 metre pool.

This once in a lifetime opportunity to build a facility for the future and one that the community has been promised.
