LABOR COMMITTED TO FAIRER RATES FOR BENDIGO

The Andrews Labor Government is committed to ensuring fair go council rates for City of Greater Bendigo residents, State Members for Bendigo, Maree Edwards MP and Jacinta Allan MP said today.

Ms Edwards said the Labor Government’s plan to cap rates to inflation would mean more transparency and accountability in rate increases for local residents.

“The rate cap would be in place from 2016-17 and would end the overinflated and over-the-top rate increases of the past.”

“Under the Labor Government’s plan, any council proposing an increase above inflation will need to justify its spending to the Essential Services Commission (ESC).”

“For Bendigo families struggling to make ends meet, it’s only fair that council explain where their rates are going,” said Ms Allan.

“Our plan means more accountability in the way councils increase their rates, as well as promoting greater sustainability in the sector.”
