Member for Bendigo West, Maree Edwards has tabled two petitions in Parliament today on behalf of the Bendigo Taxi Association Co-Op and the Castlemaine Taxis.

Ms Edwards said the Taxi drivers and owners from Bendigo and Castlemaine had contacted her to express their objection to some of the recommendations in the recent draft Taxi Industry Inquiry conducted by Professor Allan Fels.

“The main concern for our regional taxis is that they don’t want to be compared to the Melbourne taxi industry”.

“Many of the recommendations do not apply to our rural and regional taxi industry”.

“The Bendigo Taxi petition contained 578 signatures and the Castlemaine Taxi petition contained 438 signatures”.

“This represents 1000 people consisting of drivers, passengers and concerned citizens who have requested that the Government take into consideration their concerns about some of the recommendations that will have a negative impact on rural and regional taxis”.

“What is needed is a supplementary Inquiry that looks solely at the rural and regional taxi Industry.”
