The National Party Member in Bendigo Damian Drum should be ashamed that his party who are responsible for the cuts to the TAFE sector have today been responsible for the 100 jobs that will go from Bendigo TAFE, 39 courses that will be slashed and the closure of the Kyneton campus, Member for Bendigo West, Maree Edwards said today.

“This is not a Party or a government that cares about regional Victoria. The loss of jobs and courses is a terrible blow to central Victoria but the loss of the whole Kyneton campus will be devastating to that community”.

“The job losses from Bendigo TAFE combined with the massive public sector job losses announced late on Friday afternoon will add to the growing level of unemployment in regional victoria”.

“Instead of supporting skills training and putting up a jobs plan, the Nationals and the Liberals are making these savage cuts that will impact directly on regional students and regional families”.

“Mr Drum should come out of hiding over his party's slashing to Bendigo TAFE especially in light of the revelation that TAFE courses at prisons will not be affected”.

Ms Edwards said the National party controlled the TAFE portfolio in the State Government and they had championed axing courses and funds to country TAFEs.

“The biggest cut in the State Budget was to the National party controlled TAFE portfolio”.

Ms Edwards said removing courses took away opportunities for Bendigo and regional families.

"Fewer skills in the community leads to a reduction in productivity, a poorer economy, and increased unemployment", Ms Edwards said.
